For example, a 10 ton log splitter has a hydraulic pump capable of exerting 10 tons of pressure onto the wood through the piston.

Unfortunately, many other variables also come into play that most people don’t consider when purchasing a log splitter. The shape of the splitting wedge can be a huge factor in the effectiveness of the machine.

Also, the quality of the components that are attached to the hydraulic piston can be weak spots if they aren’t matched properly to the design of the machine.

The cycle time can be the most important factor that will affect how much wood you can split in a given amount of time. You can have a large hydraulic log splitter that moves the piston very slowly and retracts the piston slowly. This will really reduce your firewood production.

Most hydraulic wood splitters for the home consumer and professional are built with force capacities of 4 tons to 40 tons of splitting force. For the most part the larger the hydraulics and splitting capacity the more costly the log splitter.

Commercial firewood processors will have additional features on the wood splitter that are hydraulic, like log loading ramps and automatic log pushers. These allow for large volumes of wood to be processed with much less physical manpower.
